Make Insulation Upgrades

Most people think about insulation as something that keeps houses warm in the winter. But insulation doesn’t just work in the winter—it also keeps your house cooler in the summer.

Insulation works by slowing down heat transfer through your walls, crawlspace, and attic. In the winter, it stops heat from escaping your house. But in the summer, it works in reverse, stopping outside heat from coming in.

There are three key areas to insulate in your home for cooler summer temperatures:

In most cases, we recommend starting with the attic. Proper attic insulation will block out the heat that beats down on your roof during the day, resulting in cooler temperatures throughout your entire home. It is one of the most cost-effective yet impactful ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Air Seal Your Attic & Crawl Space

Your house may seem fully sealed off from the outside world but in all likelihood, it’s not. Openings around attic knee walls, attic hatches, wiring holes, vents, rim joists, and other areas hidden away inside your attic and crawl space allow air to flow freely into and out of your home.

These openings allow a vacuum-like phenomenon called the stack effect to occur. In the summer, changes in air pressure cause cool air to escape through air leaks in the bottom of your house while hot air is drawn in through air leaks in the attic to replace it. Not only does this make your house hotter, but it can also bring outdoor air pollutants in, hurting your indoor air quality

Air sealing is the process of locating and closing up these openings. Together, air sealing and insulation control heat and air movement within your home to create a more comfortable and consistent temperature year-round.
