Federal Tax Credits for Solar Panels End Soon! Don't Miss Your Last Chance to Save 30%

Thinking about installing rooftop solar panels or a backup battery for your home? The federal government will help you pay for them, but only if you get started in the next few weeks.

The federal solar tax credit, which lets you claim 30% of your installation costs as a credit on your federal taxes, ends on December 31, 2025.

That might sound like plenty of time. But solar panel installations take a while—usually a few months. If you want to beat the deadline, you need to start getting quotes today.

At Sustainergy Cooperative, we’re committed to helping as many homeowners as possible install before the solar tax credit ends. Here’s everything you need to know if you don’t want to miss out.

Home Solar Tax Credits End December 31, 2025

The solar tax credit was first enacted in 2006. It has since become the top driver of clean energy adoption in the United States, helping the industry grow by 200X, according to the Clean Energy Industries Association

In 2022, the Biden Administration doubled down on the tax credits' success, extended the 30% tax credit for a full decade as part of the Inflation Reduction Act.

But all that growth came crashing down when President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill. The new law eliminates the solar tax credit, along with many other clean energy incentives, years ahead of schedule.

Now, the tax credit for solar panels is going away. It will end on December 31, 2025, for residential solar panels and battery storage systems.

To claim it, your installation must be completed by the last day of the year. It’s not enough to sign a contract or even pay for your solar panels. You must install your system, pass utility inspections, and get your “Permission to Operate” before the deadline.

You Can Still Get a Tax Credit for Solar Panels in 2025

The good news is that you still have time to claim the solar tax credit. But, with only a few months left in the year, you need to start the installation process immediately.

Installing solar panels isn’t like replacing your furnace or buying a new water heater. It’s a major home improvement, more akin to renovating your kitchen than installing an appliance.

The installation itself only takes a few hours, but there’s a lot of planning involved. You need permits and utility approval, which can be hard to get, especially when hundreds of other homeowners are rushing to get theirs before the tax credit deadline.

If you don’t want to risk missing out on the tax credit, our advice is to start today. We have slots available, but our schedule is filling up. Soon, we won’t be able to guarantee a 2025 install. If you wait even another day or two, you could miss out.
